Reconstructing range dynamics and range fragmentation of European bison for the last 8000years

چکیده
Globally, biodiversity is in decline and conservationists face the challenge to identify pathways to preserving species and populations in an increasingly dynamic world (Pressey et al., 2007; Brook et al., 2008; Franklin, 2010). The drivers of environmental change such as climate or land use change increasingly affect large regions at once. Designing resilient conservation strategies and deciding upon the most effective use of limited conservation funds therefore require moving Geography Department, HumboldtUniversität zu Berlin, Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin, Germany, Earth System Analysis, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), PO Box 60 12 03, Telegraphenberg A62, D-14412 Potsdam, Germany, LOEWE Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F), Senckenberganlage 25, D-60325 Frankfurt/Main, Germany, Department of Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, Lund University, Sölvegatan 12, SE-223 62 Lund, Sweden, Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology, University of WisconsinMadison, 1630 Linden Drive, Madison, WI 53706, USA

Predicting potential European bison habitat across its former range.
Habitat loss threatens large mammals worldwide, and their survival will depend on habitat in human-dominated landscapes. Conservation planners thus face the challenge to identify areas of least conflict with land use, yet broadscale species distribution models rarely incorporate real landscape patterns nor do they identify potential conservation conflicts. An excellent example of such conservat...
متن کاملTaxonomic and faunistic study of chewing lice from European bison and other ungulate mammals in Poland
Specific chewing lice from European bison and some selected species of common European ungulate mammals – cattle, horses, goats, roe deer, red deer, were examined. The faunistic research was on four species of chewing lice, including Bisonicola sedecimdecembrii from European bison (prevalence – 46%, mean intensity – 11 specimens), Bovicola bovis from cattle (29%, 5), Bovicola caprae from goat (...
متن کاملInvestigation of Vegetation Dynamics and Range Conditions in Central Desert of Iran (Case Study: Haftooman, Khoor and Biabanak)
Abstract. The purpose of this study was to investigate vegetation dynamics and range conditions considering the climatic conditions and soil properties in Haftooman, Khoor and Biabanak deserts, Iran. For this purpose, after determining vegetation types and the associated species, the type of rangeland utilization, grazing season, the livestock type, the other relevant information, vegetation da...
متن کاملEuropean Bison habitat in the Carpathian Mountains
European Bison (Bison bonasus) barely escaped extinction in the early 20th century and now only occur in small isolated herds scattered across Central and Eastern Europe. The species’ survival in the wild depends on identifying suitable habitat for establishing bison metapopulations via reintroductions of new herds. We assessed European Bison habitat across the Carpathian Mountains, a stronghol...
متن کاملFirst Steps into the Wild – Exploration Behavior of European Bison after the First Reintroduction in Western Europe
Biodiversity is rapidly declining globally. One strategy to help to conserve species is to breed species in captivity and release them into suitable habitats. The way that reintroduced animals explore new habitats and/or disperse from the release site is rarely studied in detail and represents key information for the success of reintroduction projects. The European bison (Bison bonasus L. 1758)...
